Damon Gameau, Actor & Director of a new documentary called “That Sugar Film”. The film is being released in Australia in March 2015. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body.
He consumes foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’ such as low fat yoghurts, fruit juices and cereals (hidden sugars). He doesn’t have soft drinks, ice cream or confectionery. He eats the same number of calories as before but found he was never feeling full.
He carried out the experiment for 60 days. Shockingly, in only 3 weeks, he had already started to develop fatty liver disease. He put on 10 cm of visceral fat around his stomach. Visceral fat is body fat that is stored within the abdominal cavity and is stored around important organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. Storing higher amounts of visceral fat has been shown to be associated with increased risks of a number of health problems such as type 2 diabetes.
In the film, there are guest features from Stephen Fry, Isabel Lucas and Brenton Thwaites. Gary Taubes, Michael Moss and Kimber Stanhope are all interviewed.
